What
is your policy? We
support third party projects.
We develop our own projects on certain themes.
We bring together people with very different views.
We carry out assignments at the request of regional, federal,
European and international governments and institutions.
We work together with various different partners.
We support research only when it is instrumental for planning,
implementing or evaluating activities in a particular programme
area.
What
are the primary programmes of the Spanda Foundation? The
Foundation has four core programmes: Culture, Education, Health
& Environment, Research. Specific priorities have been identified
for each programme.
What
is the geographic scope of your activities-programmes? By
and large our activities and programmes have an international
and transnational focus. We foster national, international and
transnational collaboration by providing valuable contacts, information
and opportunities to spread innovation and build long-term sustainability.
What
kind of ideas does Spanda look for? We
look for ideas and innovative solutions that will create national,
regional or global systemic change, high impact and broad replicable
applications.
What
types of organizations do you relate with? The
vast majority of our attention, but non exclusively, goes to non-profit
organizations and tax-exempt institutions, such as US 501(c)(3)
status, or the equivalent in other countries.
What
is the best way to make initial contact with the Foundation? We
encourage organizations looking for partnership from the Foundation
to review our programme information in detail.
In most cases we prefer organizations submit a letter of inquiry
rather than a full proposal. The letter of inquiry should state
explicitly the reasons why Spanda should be interested to partner
with you; contain a brief description of the purpose and objective
of the project with general methodology and total costs.
What
does Spanda mean? Spanda
is the Sanskrit term for the original subtle vibration arising
from the dynamic interplay of the passive and the creative polarizations
of the Absolute, and that by unfolding itself into differentiation
bringing forth the whole of creation. You can learn more on the
meaning of this term by visiting our Origin
of the Name page.
What
does the Spanda logo stand for?
The
Spanda's logo stands for the interwoven balanced interplaying
of the active and passive energies (angles and curves, masculine
and feminine, etc.) inscribed into a stable yet highly dynamic
regular hexagonal shaped frame. A hexagon being a polygon with
six edges and six vertices which stands for action. Six are also
the directions of space – symbol of our life in this world, where
the cube of six sides is the typical shape of any existential
object.
Like squares and equilateral triangles, regular hexagons fit together
without any gaps to tile the plane (three hexagons meeting at
every vertex), and so are useful for constructing tessellations*.
The cells of a beehive honeycomb are hexagonal for this reason
and because the shape makes efficient use of space and building
materials.
* Tessellate (verb), tessellation (noun): from Latin tessera
"a square tablet" or "a die used for gambling."
Latin tessera may have been borrowed from Greek tessares,
meaning "four," since a square tile has four sides.
The diminutive of tessera was tessella, a small,
square piece of stone or a cubical tile used in mosaics. Since
a mosaic extends over a given area without leaving any region
uncovered, the meaning of the word tessellate is to cover the
plane with a pattern in such a way as to leave no region uncovered."
By extension, space or hyperspace may also be tessellated, as
may Spanda's activities.
